Belaire Ferries Ltd is the proud provider of the West Harbour and Rakino Island Ferry Service, operating under an Auckland Transport contract. Privately-owned and operated the Head Office, and the location of the Operations Manager role is based at West Harbour Marina. You will be working at a waterside location and will enjoy working in a small team environment absolutely dedicated to providing Best-in-Class customer service and delivery.
Reporting to the Managing Director you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the business. The scope of the role is incredibly broad and you will be able to demonstrate your ability to manage multiple priorities, problem-solve and take on the responsibility for managing a diverse range of responsibilities, including shore and maritime services. This is a key role in the business and you will take on the role as 2IC to the Managing Director.
Broadly, the scope of your role will include, though not be limited to:
- Operations leadership
- Resource and labour management – including managing rosters
- People management and Human Resources – including recruitment, staff appraisals, etc
- Maintenance of equipment and facilities – including managing supplier contracts and organising maintenance services and repairs for the ferry fleet
- Health & Safety
- Managing and optimising operational performance and efficiency
- Continuous Improvement
- Forecasting and supply/demand planning
- Supplier and customer relationship management
- Administration, database management and compliance
- Problem-solving – resolving any issues in relation to breakdowns, bad weather, cancellations, etc
- Managing the relationship with Auckland Transport, including attending regular project and account meetings

This is an opportunity where you will have genuine leadership responsibility. From managing the day-to-day operations of shore and maritime services to managing relationships with customers, suppliers and Auckland Transport; you will own and lead all operational activities for the business.
A background in ferry services or transport is not essential. However, it is likely that you have held an operational management role in an area such as transport, warehousing, distribution or perhaps production, this, coupled with your unerring commitment to Best Practice operational management and customer service, will ensure your success in running day-to-day operations whilst also achieving success in improving overall performance and efficiency across the business.
The role requires a hands-on approach and as a key member of the business, you can expect to have an interesting, challenging role with lots of variety. You will be working with skippers, deckhands, administrative staff, suppliers, contractors, customers and the Managing Director. As such being a people person is essential and you will enjoy working in a busy role and being able to make a valuable contribution. There is scope to take on more responsibility in the future and you will have the opportunity to learn from the Managing Director who has a wealth of experience in the industry.
The salary package is negotiable depending on experience and the benefits package is able to be tailored to an extent depending on your requirements. It will include KiwiSaver, parking, and a mobile phone. Due to the nature of the business, you will be required to take calls and work outside of office hours as required. However, you will be offered flexibility over working hours to suit your work/life balance.
