GM Sales

13 / 08 / 2026

  • Christchurch
  • Permanent / Full Time
  • Sales / Sales Director / Head of Sales

Description

About the company

Our client is a large, privately owned New Zealand group of businesses with an end-to-end commercial model, generating demand and converting it into completed sales nationwide. It’s a business with genuine scale that still runs lean and moves fast, and this is a critical leadership role reporting to the divisional CEO.

Purpose of the role

As GM Sales, you’ll own the sales function end to end and be accountable for what it converts. You’ll take a large team on a journey of sales excellence, converting the leads and product the business generates into signed agreements, satisfied customers and referrals, through a disciplined process and strong systems. You’ll lead three functional leaders and, through them, a national team of around 30.

Key responsibilities

  • Own national sales conversion and forecasting, from enquiry through to completed sale
  • Maintain a credible pipeline forecast and present and defend it to the Board
  • Own and enforce the national sales process and the commercial mandate behind it
  • Partner closely with Marketing on lead quality, conversion feedback and lead allocation
  • Build demand-generation channels beyond Marketing: external partners, referrals, and outbound/database activity
  • Lead, coach and develop three functional leaders and build bench strength and capability across the wider team
  • Own the Hubspot CRM and the sales reporting stack as the single source of truth for the function
  • Feed commercial and customer insight back into product and pricing decisions

Key skills & experience required

  • Proven senior sales leadership experience at GM Sales, Head of Sales, or equivalent level
  • Strong executive presence and credibility reporting to board level
  • Strategic, commercial, fast-paced operator, not a caretaker leader
  • Comfortable in an informal, less structured environment; SME or scale-up exposure highly regarded, a purely large-corporate background may not translate well
  • High performing, resilient and confident enough to hold their ground and back their view
  • Demonstrated ability to bring a large, dispersed team on a journey through clear direction and expectations
  • Experience selling pre-completion or pre-delivery products highly regarded but not essential

What’s in it for you?

This is a rare GM-level mandate with direct divisional CEO access and genuine strategic influence over a national sales function of real scale. You’ll lead a large team through three functional leaders, in a business that runs lean rather than like a heavy corporate, real autonomy and room to build. The package reflects the seniority of the role, and while property or building consutrcution sector experience is a bonus, we’re looking for sales leadership calibre and the right character fit above all else.

Description

About the Company
Established in 1948, Silver Fern Farms is a market-led food company, taking sustainably and ethically raised, grass-fed red meat and natural products from Aotearoa to the world. It is New Zealand’s leading processor, marketer and exporter of premium lamb, beef and venison, supplying more than 60 markets globally and operating in red meat, the country’s second largest export industry.

The business is deeply connected to rural New Zealand. At peak season it employs over 6,000 people worldwide and works with a network of more than 16,000 farmer suppliers nationwide, underpinned by an enduring commitment to sustainability and a nature-positive future. Following a return to profitability and a significant multi-year capital investment programme, treasury is central to how it funds the next phase.

The Role
As a member of the CFO’s senior leadership team, you will lead treasury and capital management end-to-end, with balance sheet management at its core – shaping the wider capital structure and the decisions of how and when capital is allocated. As a major exporter, the business carries real foreign exchange and interest rate exposure that must be actively managed and hedged, and you will own that risk. At Silver Fern Farms, Treasury is a highly commercial, strategic and value-add function, and you will have the mandate to run it as one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead balance sheet strategy and optimisation, shaping the wider capital structure
  • Drive how and when capital is allocated across the Group
  • Develop and execute funding, refinancing and lender negotiations
  • Manage debt facilities, covenant compliance and banking relationships
  • Free up liquidity and own group cash flow forecasting across seasonal cycles
  • Set working capital targets and partner across the business to release cash
  • Own FX, interest rate and hedging strategy given significant export exposure
  • Advise the CFO and ELT on funding, M&A and major investment decisions

Key Skills & Experience Required

  • Tertiary qualification in finance, accounting, economics or a related discipline
  • Typically 10+ years in treasury, corporate finance or capital management
  • Deep expertise across balance sheet, funding, liquidity and financial risk
  • Strong FX and interest rate risk management and hedging experience
  • Comfortable operating with ambiguity in a dynamic, seasonal environment
  • Advanced financial modelling, scenario analysis and cash flow forecasting
  • A commercial, value-add mindset with the instinct to challenge and improve process
  • Proven ability to influence at Executive and Board level

What’s in it for you
Treasury here is treated as a highly commercial, strategic function, not a back-office one, and you will have the autonomy to run it end-to-end with the backing of a CFO who wants it led independently. There is real scope to do things differently – to evolve process, sharpen how capital is allocated, and to optimise the function whilst working towards best practice.

Competitive remuneration is on offer, as is a seat in the CFO’s leadership team with executive team exposure. As the custodian of one of the largest treasury functions in NZ, this role offers the mandate to add significant value to a NZ business with a global reach.
