This week Consultant Sam Wilson celebrates one year with Hunter Campbell. We talk to her about her job and what she enjoys doing at work and outside of work.
Sam is an expert contract recruitment specialist who works in our Accounting and Finance team. The team recruits both temporary and permanent roles across a range of industries and organisations, from small firms to multinational businesses. Sam herself specialises in transactional level roles including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Officers as well as Payroll and Assistant Accountants.
Hunter Campbell Founding Partner Lee Marshall says: “Sam is exceptional. When we met her, we knew she was the right person to help us build the Accounting Support business. In just one year, there has been significant growth in this area and that’s due to Sam.
“She has worked hard to build up a great network of candidates at this level so she can find contract staff quickly almost every time.
“Her positive energy has made a big impact and we love having her around as much as her candidates and clients enjoy dealing with her,” Lee says.
What do you like most about your job?
I really like helping candidates secure a new position and finding the right candidates for our clients. These are by far the best parts of the job.
The candidates we deal with are truly appreciative of the service we provide, and I like keeping up with them to hear about how they are enjoying their new roles. It’s the same with the clients, I love finding out about how well their new employees are getting on. It’s nice when you are able to make a difference for their teams.
Tell us about your career journey so far?
After attending Auckland University, I went to work in the healthcare sector where my job included co-ordinating care for people and I also assisted with recruiting nursing staff.
At the time I had a friend working in recruitment and I loved the sound of what she did so I decided to make a change into full-time recruitment. I spent some time working in a recruitment agency before coming here last year. Everyone at Hunter Campbell has a lot of experience; they’re great mentors and I’ve learnt so much. I feel really lucky to have a job here because it’s such a special place to work and I have the loveliest workmates.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
It’s hard to think of one highlight only but definitely what I enjoy is building great relationships with clients and candidates and making sure they are happy.
What does your average workday look like?
First I catch up on my email, grab a coffee and then check in with the team. Usually I have a few candidate interviews and client meetings. In between these meetings, I source candidates. Keeping in constant communication is important in recruitment so I spend time checking in with clients and candidates I’ve placed to make sure everything is going well.
Recruitment is busy, every day is different, and I love it.
Name three things you would do on your perfect day?
That would definitely include reading a good book, going for a swim and having dinner with friends on a summer day. If there was time, I’d also try and fit in a fishing trip.
What is the nicest (or strangest) compliment you have received?
One of our clients recently told me after I’d placed an accounts payable officer in their company that it was the best experience she’d had with a recruiter because it was a seamless process, it was quick and a great candidate joined their team.
