Matt Kerr takes out the Sunshine Coast 70.3 Ironman

Triathlete Matt Kerr has made it 3 for 3 after taking out the Sunshine Coast 70.3 Ironman recently. Not only did he take the tape as first age grouper home with an advantage of 2.5 minutes over the remaining field, he also smashed the Sunshine Coast amateur course record.

The race was held at Mooloolaba with a huge field  of 1,500  strong athletes in total, who all managed to get to QLD for the event around COVID restrictions.

We heard from Matt recently around the intense preparation a race like this takes and the dedication to be in top condition on race day, which of course is the test to see if all that hard work and sacrifice has paid off.

Matt kicked off the race with a good swim against some very fast swimmers and was in a great position coming out of the transition and into the 90km bike ride.  A very windy but fast course Matt managed to maintain a cracking fast pace and test the other riders in the first bunch over the initial 9km. As the few front riders settled down, he led the field all the way home with an overall 3.5 minute advantage as he left the bike transition into the run.  Maintaining a near perfect run rate he kept the remainder of the field at bay and by mid-way was well into the back end of the Pro field who had started 5 mins ahead of him at the swim.

Hunter Campbell continue to be impressed by the dedication of Matt and his determination to succeed. A huge congratulations from the Hunter Campbell team Matt and we look forward to seeing what you are up to next.
