Matt Kerr takes out the win at Carins Ironman

After competing in the Utah Worlds last month Matt had a huge task to prepare for the Full Ironman in Carins last week. He arrived in Carins two weeks early to prep with Braden Currie, this preparation combined with his intense determination contributed to his success on the day.

Starting the race in a very competitive swim Matt came out of the water in 10th position. He made up some time through transition 1 to start out the bike in 6th position. He then set off in what was a very aggressive ride, where he slowly carved his way up the ladder, leading at the half waypoint (94km) with a couple of competitors close on his tail.

Keeping in first place he had a solid ride into the run transition with only a minutes lead on his opponent. Again he made some gains in the transition and had an outstanding run holding the lead all the way for 42km. His focus and determination shone through and his deliberate strategy of maintaining a good consistent pattern meant he extended his lead, taking out the win 20 minutes ahead of the next competitor. On top of that he smashed the course record of 8.36 with a time of 8.31.

Matt now has some time on the Sunshine Coast for his next training block while he continues his preparation for the Kona World Champs in October.
